Bernie’s Lunch & Supper opened in Chicago’s historic River North neighborhood in the summer of 2015. This is Chef Zack Sklar’s first venture in Chicago. Located on the corner of Erie and Orleans Streets, Bernie’s is set in an inviting and casual yet refined space that includes family-style seating with rich turquoise banquets, coffered ceilings and an eclectic collection of textiles.

Custom brass features like the laser-cut screen defining the host area elevate this casual environment for a space as special as it is approachable. Entering the dining room, all lines draw attention to the open kitchen and the wood-burning oven, highlighted by custom firewood storage shelves, a wall of herringbone patterned white tiles, and a stunning center cluster of brass heat lamps. A mix of white marble and wood table tops glow in warm light from custom brass chandeliers with frosted glass globes. Next to the main dining room, the elegant yet inviting bar is defined by dark wood shelving suspended in a brass frame system with playful details in the leather straps and collected belt buckles that hold liquor bottles in place. At the stair wall, a nostalgic hand-painted mural of Bernie overlooks diners enjoying his grandson’s delectable menu.
A second spacious dining area and bar on the open-air rooftop carries the turquoise accents of the dining room in patina metal panels. A wash of this green-blue is also used in the wide diagonal lines stained on the concrete floor to create movement throughout the space. Custom tables, built-in cedar plank seating, and coordinating planters complete the distinct outdoor look.
